Training managers are being presented with an increasing array of options to use when planning a learning intervention. The constant advance of digital technologies  means there are many different ways of blending traditional approaches and digital tools to support students’ learning.

At LINE we have seen – and welcomed – the growth in the use of technology as an enabler of the learning process. The increasing pervasiveness of broadband networks and mobile devices into both the work and home environments has a real impact on the time and place where people can learn.

The development of highly immersive online training packages such as the BBC’s editorial policy and Ikea’s Concept workshop are down to the innovative and creative use of the appropriate technologies as part of the learning strategy.

A film clip has long been a favourite in face-to-face training. Now we are experimenting with ways to use video in virtual classrooms too. Recent developments in compression technology mean it is now possible to play HD quality video (live if you choose) into a virtual classroom session. The same content can also be published to mobile platforms such as ultra mobile PCs and smart ‘phones.

Technological advances also mean that 2010 is likely to be the year when we start to realise the enormous potential of electronic performance support systems. Many millions of employees now interface with some form of technology on a daily basis providing the vehicle to deliver highly tailored and relevant learning. Add to this the high level of maturity many training organisations have now reached – and there is a real potential for performance tracking systems to trigger learning at the moment of need.
